History of Sharif University of Technology

Sharif University of Technology was founded in 1966 under the name Aryamehr University of Technology by Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi. At that time, 54 faculty members and a total of 412 students were selected through the national entrance exam. Initially, only four departments were established: Electrical Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.

In 1972, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi appointed Seyyed Hossein Nasr as the university’s president, aiming to model the institution after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) while maintaining Iranian cultural roots. In 1974, a new campus was established in Isfahan. However, that campus later became an independent university named Isfahan University of Technology (IUT).
