About Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST)

Located in northeastern Tehran, Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) is widely regarded as one of the country’s leading institutions for engineering and applied sciences. It was the first university in Iran to offer doctoral programs in materials engineering, metallurgy, and transportation—establishing itself early on as a trailblazer in advanced technical education.

IUST is home to highly specialized faculties, including the School of Railway Engineering and the School of Automotive Engineering—both of which are rare even by international standards. The university also boasts a strong research infrastructure, with 12 research centers and 19 specialized libraries supporting a broad range of scientific inquiry.

Beyond its main campus, IUST has expanded across several regions in Iran, increasing accessibility for students and extending its academic reach. With a strong focus on both innovation and industry-driven education, IUST plays a critical role in developing the next generation of engineers and technical experts who are equipped to make meaningful contributions on both national and global levels.

A Brief History of Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST)

Iran University of Science and Technology traces its roots back to 1929, when it was founded as the Governmental Technical Institute with a mission to train engineers for the country’s emerging industrial sector. The institute was soon renamed the Advanced Technical School, and by the early 1930s, it had already graduated Iran’s first engineers in mechanical and chemical engineering.

In 1958, it adopted the name Tehran Institute of Technology (TIT), and five years later, in 1963, the campus relocated to its current site in the Narmak district of northeastern Tehran. As the institution rapidly expanded in scope and reputation, it was rebranded in 1972 as the Iran Faculty of Science and Technology—earning recognition as the country’s first specialized engineering college. In 1978, it gained full university status and has since been known as Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST).
